Will AI replace humans? It is one of the most common questions of the technological era. But it may not be the most useful one.
A better question is: What happens when increasingly capable AI is combined with increasingly capable humans?
AI is getting better at execution
Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index describes a shift toward AI agents taking on more execution while humans spend more time directing work, making decisions and owning outcomes.
The outcome isn’t automatic
Technology can give us more time. What we do with that time is a human decision. We can use AI to write every communication—or use it to prepare for better conversations. We can use AI to generate every idea—or use it to challenge our ideas.
Healthcare is one example
A 2026 systematic review of AI in physician-patient communication found AI-generated responses often scored highly for empathy and clarity, while the authors emphasized limitations around long-term trust and the importance of human oversight.
The Human Advantage is a combination
Empathy, judgment, curiosity, creativity, communication, context, experience, values and purpose work together to help people decide what matters and what should happen next.
Human Impact Takeaway
The future isn’t humans versus AI. It’s human + AI.
AI is changing what humans can do. Human Impact asks humans to decide what they want to remain responsible for.
